Los Angeles Therapist EXCERPT:
Does he have serious issues?
“If he has been emotionally, physically or sexually abusive,” says Yvonne Thomas, Ph.D., an L.A.-based psychologist, “or if he is addicted to gambling, drinking or sex with other women and he’s not getting help, never go back. Romantic gestures are worthless if he’s not fixing the real problem.”
Is he just lonely?
“If you can’t tell, ask him,” says Thomas. “Is this guy panicked and desperate, or does he truly miss you? Let him plead his case. If what he says rings true, he may be worth a second chance. But listen with your head–you don’t want to be a placeholder until someone else comes along who he thinks is better.”
Do you communicate well with each other?
After the flowers droop, you’ll need to deal with the issues that caused the breakup. “Be open to talking about your feelings, resentments and hurts to have a true new start,” says Thomas. “Otherwise, all those problems will manifest themselves again. Learn from what didn’t work in the past.”
